Sand dollars are flat, white sea urchins with beautiful star-shaped patterns. They are often found washed up along Florida’s beaches and are a favorite discovery for beachgoers.
They are especially common on islands and calm coastal areas such as Sanibel Island, Captiva, and Barefoot Beach. Early mornings and low tide offer the best chances for finding them.
While they make beautiful keepsakes, it’s important to only collect empty shells. Living sand dollars should always be left in their natural habitat to protect marine life.
