Our guide, Nita, may not be related to Indiana Jones, but she fearlessly navigates the rough terrain. The 100,000-acre Babcock property is a prime example of untouched nature. Over 900 species of trees and plants are cultivated here, and many wild animals have found a safe haven in this natural paradise.
We soon spot a herd of bison peacefully grazing in an open meadow. These mighty animals—females can weigh up to 1,000 lbs, males up to 2,000 lbs—remain calm and unbothered. Nita brings the Swamp Buggy up close, but no one dares to reach out and touch their shaggy coats—the Babcock bison command too much respect.
We continue past cranes, egrets, and anhingas, as chirps and rustling sounds fill the air. Then we encounter the elegant Senpol cattle, known for their shiny brown coats and lack of horns. A herd of wild turkeys is the only thing that breaks their usual calm.
Across the field stands the family’s former home from 1924. On the porch, an old rocking chair sways eerily in the breeze. Behind the house glistens a lily pond. Did you know the roots of water lilies are edible? When sliced, they’re great in salads and taste similar to radish. But don’t try fishing here—an alligator is lurking among the blossoms, watching closely.
We move on, crossing a riverbed and immersing ourselves in the swamp. Cypress and pine trees grow densely here, draped with Spanish moss that resembles thick spiderwebs. This plant once inspired Henry Ford to use it as stuffing for his prototype car seats. Despite its appearance, it’s actually a bromeliad that lives entirely off air.
We approach a true swamp crossing. The buggy crawls through mud, roots, bushes, and algae. Occasionally, we glimpse the snout of an alligator at the water’s surface—its body hidden beneath. Alligators are perfectly built for this habitat: waterproof from head to tail, equipped with a protective film over their eyes and a tongue that seals the throat when diving for prey. A brilliant feat of natural design!
Back on dry land, a narrow wooden boardwalk leads us—flanked by sleepy-looking gators—to a wildlife enclosure. There we spot the elusive Florida Panther. Five of these protected felines have found a safe home on the ranch.
With about 20 minutes left of our 90-minute tour, we make one more stop. Two mysterious, mirror-like lakes appear before us. On fallen logs, alligators bask lazily in the midday sun. After a quick photo stop, Nita steers the Swamp Buggy over a sandy trail back to the departure point.
The adventure doesn’t end with the buggy ride. At Babcock Ranch Camp, visitors can explore more. For example, the onsite museum—a wooden house showcasing vintage tools and a 19th-century Coca-Cola crate. The wood for these crates was once milled on the ranch itself.
Film buffs will recognize the location: Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne filmed "Just Cause" here in 1994. Photographs throughout the museum document the exciting filming weeks.
