Our best-kept secret is not downtown, at a beach, or on an island – it is found nowhere on land. It is a growing network of artificial reefs, perfect for diving, snorkeling, and fishing.
More than two dozen man-made artificial reef sites extend across the Fort Myers area, from the shallow coastal waters to 30 miles offshore. These purpose-built reefs in Florida are made from the steel of towers and sunk ships, as well as concrete and railroad cars. All provide a special home to more than 250 fish species and countless types of marine life.
We invite you to explore this fascinating underwater world. Naples, Fort Myers, Boca Grande, and Venice to the north are popular diving locations, with several spectacular dive sites.
Most planned artificial reefs are located between six and fourteen miles offshore. This area offers some fantastic remote and deeper wrecks that are perfect for technical divers, but also many wrecks and inshore dive spots that are great for beginners.
Visibility ranges from near zero close to the shore to over one hundred feet farther out. The water temperature remains warm year-round, ranging between 65 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (19–32 degrees Celsius).
