J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge – World-Famous Wildlife & Birding Sanctuary on Sanibel Island Florida

As part of one of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystems in the country, the refuge is home to more than 245 bird species, as well as reptiles, amphibians, and mammals such as manatees. The best time to visit—especially for birdwatching—is between November and April, when migratory birds gather in large numbers.

Things to Do & Explore

Visitors can explore the refuge in several ways. A two-mile walking trail offers close-up views of the environment, while the scenic Wildlife Drive provides stunning water views on both sides. Canoeing and biking are also popular ways to experience the refuge.

• No camping allowed
