The Museum of the Everglades in Everglades City offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into over 2,000 years of human history in the region. Exhibits explore the area's development from early Native American cultures to modern times.
The museum was established in 1927 during the boom of the Tamiami Trail project by city founder Barron Gilt Collier, inside a modest yet historic structure that originally served as a commercial laundry. Today, it houses exhibits showcasing the history of Everglades City and the Chokoloskee Bay region and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Visitors can learn about the Calusa and Seminole Indians, early pioneers, and the region’s transformation through the building of the Tamiami Trail. Rotating exhibits and public events ensure fresh perspectives year-round.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free, with donations appreciated.
