The Marco Island Historical Museum offers a captivating look into the history of Marco Island and its surroundings. The permanent exhibit “Paradise Found – 6,000 Years of People on Marco Island” traces the island's development from the era of the Calusa Indians to modern times.
Discover the native peoples who lived on the island before the arrival of Europeans, including the highly sophisticated Calusa Indians. Learn about the 1896 Pepper-Hearst Expedition led by anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing, during which many rare artifacts were excavated—most notably the famous Key Marco Cat.
Visitors can experience a life-size replica of a Calusa village and view the Key Marco artifacts, which are on display at the museum through 2026. The Key Marco Cat is considered one of North America's most important archaeological discoveries.
The museum regularly features rotating exhibits in the Sandlin Gallery and hosts events such as Pirate Day along with family-friendly educational programs.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free.
